Medical marijuana has been legalized in 23 states, plus D.C. and four states have legalized the recreational as well as the District of Columbia. By 2016, at least 10 more states are expected to consider legalization. So the next President is crucial to making this happen. Could a few ill-informed GOP presidential candidates jeopardize all of this? Maybe.
Harvard economist Jeff Miron is quoted to say,
“So far, the federal government has mostly taken a hands-off approach to state medicalizations and legalizations, but in January 2017, the country will have a new president. That person could order the attorney general to enforce federal prohibition regardless of state law”.
Although this is a scary thought, let’s lighten the mood with 4 dumb things GOP candidates have said about legal marijuana. Get ready for a laugh.
1. Marijuana is not booze
Technically speaking, no, marijuana is not booze; it is marijuana. Republicans have compared alcohol to marijuana, saying weed is much more dangerous. When in fact, the federal government has said that marijuana is actually safer than alcohol. The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has studied the facts and found that 88,000 American die each year from alcohol consumption. No such category exists for marijuana.
2. The drug war is an epic fail
Everyone know this. Yet, they keep fighting the war on drugs. They, with taxpayer money, have spent over a TRILLION dollars on this war. What do we have to show for it? Over crowded prisons, a growing black market and mobs and drug lords running the show.
Despite this, there are still people, like Ben Carson, who think, if we “intensify” the war on drugs, we can solve this problem. However, the states that have legalized marijuana have seen positive results, not to mention, revenue from the sales.
3. We don’t know enough about marijuana yet
Oh really? How about the numerous medical studies on marijuana being done not only nationally, but globally too? Marijuana has shown countless medicinal virtues for cancer patients, individuals with epilepsy, glaucoma, arthritis and more. Weed has actually been proven to kill some cancer cells. So, tell us again about how we don’t know enough about marijuana? How about you fund more studies to find out the powers that this wonderful plant has to offer.
4. If weed is legal, then Kim Davies shouldn’t have to grant gay marriages
Seriously? WTF! What kind of argument is that?
For those of you who don’t know, Kim Davis is a Kentucky county clerk who was jailed for refusing to give marriage licenses to same-sex couples. So the argument is… Exactly, there is no argument. Taking away Americans rights and freedoms seems a little reversed to us. What ever happened to America “land of the free”?

DeLeón is the first real threat that Senator Feinstein has faced in years.
Jeff Sessions plan isn’t a sudden crackdown on weed, it’s an intentionally slow and calculated dismantling of policy.
