South Africa’s industrial cannabis and hemp industries are booming, and the entire continent is looking to take part in the growth seen within its southern-most country.

Thanks to the favorable climes, affordable land, and rather inexpensive labor costs, the nation is seeing immense cannabis progress like never before, law firm Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr told Business Tech.

According to André de Lange, head of the Agriculture, Aquaculture & Fishing sector at Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr (CDH), the only way the cannabis industry in South Africa will thrive is if it’s thoroughly regulated. While regulations are still in their developmental phases, we’ll have to wait and see just how the South African government will progress.

De Lange hosts a webinar called “A Pragmatic Approach to South Africa’s Hemp Industry.” The webinar helps paint a picture of the regulatory hemp landscape, which was presented by Shaad Vayej, an associate in CDH’s Dispute Resolution practice. Later, industry stalwart and Hemporium founder, Tony Budden, shared an in-depth look at the opportunities presented in South Africa’s cannabis industry.

An associate in CDH’s Dispute Resolution practice named Liëtte van Schalkwyk closed the webinar by touching on vital information in terms of the industrial cannabis industry in Lesotho. Before the webinar ended, Vayej expanded on how South Africa is a prime destination for inexpensive, high-quality domestic and export-oriented cannabis products.

He backed up his reasoning by explaining how South Africa’s track record of innovative agriculture, relatively affordable blue and white-collar labor costs, and highly transparent compliance foundation are helping the country reach its goals in the cannabis industry.

That said, as integrated value chains with domestic and international investors continue to develop and expand throughout the nation, South Africa will fully transform itself with proper access to capital. The value chain wouldn’t mean much if it weren’t for the agro-processing businesses and secondary manufacturers, explained in South Africa’s Cannabis Master Plan.

During the webinar, Vayej broke down the Cannabis Master Plan, saying how it aims to provide a “broad framework for the development and growth of the South African cannabis industry” in order to help “economic development, job creation, inclusive participation, rural development, and poverty alleviation.”

In addition, Vayej said South African officials are estimating that 25,000 jobs would be created throughout the many value chains. Hemp for industrial purposes was administered as an agricultural crop in 1976 under the Plant Improvement Act 53. The legal framework cleared hemp for import, export, cultivation, distribution, sale, and research purposes.
