After El Salvador announced that it would adopt the digital cryptocurrency Bitcoin as a legal tender, the news struck worry and excitement across the country.

President Nayib Bukele mentioned in a prior statement that the legalization and adoption of Bitcoin would encourage investment in the country and bring prosperity to its citizens, as approximately 70% of Salvadorans currently don’t have access to “traditional financial services.”

“El Salvador has the right to advance toward the first world,” Bukele said in a translated statement. “We must break the paradigms of the past.”

He also stated that the country currently retains 550 Bitcoin, which equals roughly $26 million. Bukele later took to Twitter and noted that Bitcoin could be the most effective way to “transfer $6 billion a year in remittances.”

Bukele also retweeted a tweet from a citizen, Aaron van Wirdum, who expanded on his experience using Bitcoin to pay for his breakfast.

“Just walked into a McDonald’s in San Salvador to see if I could pay for my breakfast with bitcoin, tbh fully expecting to be told no. But low and behold, they printed a ticket with QR that took me to a webpage with Lightning invoice, and now I’m enjoying my Desayuno traditional!” read the tweet.

Although the recent adoption of Bitcoin has made waves across the globe, a recent poll by the Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas, a Jesuit college in El Salvador, saw that 67.9% of people were opposed to making Bitcoin a legal tender alongside the U.S. dollar.

The poll was followed by comments and responses saying that many aren’t familiar with cryptocurrency or how to use it. Some even went as far as wearing t-shirts to parliament that express their anti-Bitcoin position.
