World Anti-Doping Agency To Review Cannabis As A Banned Substance In 2022

As marijuana continues to gain mainstream traction, agencies like WADA are finding new and progressive ways to reconsider whether it should remain a banned substance.

Following Sha’Carri Richardson’s positive marijuana test at the Tokyo Olympics was the World Anti-Doping Agency’s latest statement to review the status of cannabis on its banned substance list.

It’s said that Richardson used marijuana to cope with the loss of her mother. However, WADA’s regulatory protocol is to test athletes for substance abuse of any kind during the competition, listing THC, cocaine, heroin, and MDMA/ecstasy.

On Tuesday, WADA President Witold Bank released a statement after the progressive decision was made, “I am pleased with the decisions that were taken today by the Executive Committee on a range of key topics. These will help further strengthen the global anti-doping program and the protection of clean sport.”

WADA has been moving in a more progressive direction since relaxing its rules in 2013, increasing the difficulty of positive marijuana tests and reducing the length of the suspension. However, advocates like Sue Sisley, an Arizona-based physician and marijuana researcher, recently told The Washington Post that WADA “should be studying this just the way the NFL did.”
