Anyone tracking marijuana’s legal status throughout the United States knows that it’s a back and forth discussion between Republicans and Democrats most of the time. And in most cases, the latter is usually the party that sheds light on how beneficial marijuana can be for individual health and economic gain.

But with more states looking at how their neighbors have immensely benefited from legalizing the plant, it looks like some Republican-led states are turning a new leaf if you will, and hoping to make some pro-canna moves throughout the year. According to an in-depth report from French Toast, here are the following states to keep an eye out for.

Arkansas voted to legalize medical marijuana in 2016, and now, there are currently three recreational bills that could prompt a vote. One bill would legalize a proportionate number of dispensaries based on the state’s population.

Not even medical cannabis is legal in Idaho, but a cannabis advocacy group, The Idaho Way, is leading a ballot measure that would legalize the possession, use, and transfer of up to three ounces of cannabis.

Democrats within the state are currently trying to pass a resolution that could allow voters to choose if they want legal recreational cannabis in Kansas on the November ballot.

Although hemp is a prime crop in Kentucky, marijuana is still illegal through and through. Democrats are allegedly proposing a bill that would legalize recreational weed and automatically expunge all cannabis-related misdemeanors.

While there’s no news for Mississippi’s potential recreational market, the legalization of medical marijuana earlier this year was a huge step forward and might hopefully spur more pro-legalization efforts in the years to come.

The Cannabis Freedom Act is still being discussed by Missouri lawmakers, which would legalize adult-use marijuana possession/sales and allow the expungement of non-violent marijuana offenders.

This November, voters should expect to see recreational marijuana on the 2022 ballot, which would legalize the possession, use, and retail sale of the plant throughout the state.

Unfortunately, three bills to legalize marijuana have failed in Nebraska over the past couple of years. However, because the state is trying to raise awareness of cannabis time and again, we should expect to see some definite changes in the coming years.

In February, South Carolina passed a bill that legalized medical marijuana. However, it’s one of the most restrictive programs in the nation because of the limited number of eligible conditions. Still, these are just the first few pro-weed steps in South Carolina.

In 2020, voters in the state chose to legalize adult-use marijuana, but the Supreme Court quickly halted that motion. In some better news, cannabis advocacy groups are urging the government for another ballot vote later this year.
