Police Officer Busted For Eating A Stolen Edible On The Clock

A stolen edible from a dispensary raid almost cost this officer her job.

police officer in Toronto pleaded guilty to “discreditable conduct” after confirming that she ate a stolen chocolate bar edible from a raid that took place in 2018. Although, Const. Jamie Young wasn’t the one who stole the edible, nor did she know it was stolen in the first place.

Her partner, Const. Vittorio Dominelli, was the thief at hand and decided to steal three edible chocolate bars from Community Cannabis Clinic in Toronto after the two were called to help combat the illegal raid on January 27, 2018.

Both officers then went to a restaurant while on their shift and ate one of the edibles, according to an agreed statement of facts by prosecutor Alex Ciobotaru. Dominelli was Young’s senior officer at the time, and she felt pressured by him to share the edible. He later felt sick as a result of the chocolate bar, and they went to the hospital later that night.

At the hearing on Monday, authorities did not charge Young for the crime, as Ciobotaru read out loud that Dominelli “alone bears responsibility for the theft of the chocolate bars.” He continued to explain that Officer Young had no idea Dominelli stole the chocolate bars, nor did she realize they were stolen when eating one.

Young read a compelling apology letter that explained how she “foolishly” decided to eat the edible without rethinking the consequences or knowing it was stolen. She said it was a “huge” mistake, and she caused significant “embarrassment and injury to the reputation” of her service and fellow police officers.

She confessed that time had allowed her the opportunity to grow from this mistake, and she looks forward to serving the public once again. According to CBC News, Ciobotaru and Gary Clewley, Young’s defense counsel, created a proposal that said Young would receive an 18-month demotion to a fourth-class constable, then a 12-month demotion to a third-class constable.

After these demotions, she’s expected to be reinstated on the police force and take part in additional Toronto Police Service college retraining to reflect her title and service.
