A few hours southwest of Chicago on the banks of the Illinois River lies Starved Rock State Park with a 13-mile hiking trail and 18 different canyons. Not to mention the 14 waterfalls, which are open to visitors year-round. There are also guided hikes best taken in the spring or after heavy rainfall to experience the waterfalls in their prime. Many people gather here to do some eagle watching in the winter as thousands of these birds migrate to this area.

The Shawnee National Forest is a massive piece of land that has an abundance of hiking options. It stretches from the Ohio River on the border with Kentucky all the way to the Mississippi River that borders with Missouri in southern Illinois. Some favorite spots are the Jackson Falls trail, that’s 4.5 miles long and offers some of the best rock climbing in the state. Other popular spots are the short Rim Rock Recreational Trail and the Garden of the Gods, which features breathtaking 320 million-year-old sandstone.

The Kankakee River State Park sits on 4,000 acres of land just between the 11-mile Kankakee River. Because of the lush river, an abundance of wildlife resides in this park, and the surrounding nature is truly worth a visit. The park’s trail system also offers hiking and biking routes, which are open for snowmobiling in the winter. There’s a unique suspension bridge across the river, and the 3-mile loop along Rock Creek offers stunning views of canyons, limestone, and a waterfall.

Many of Illinois’ prairie land doesn’t exist today, making the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie a state treasure. This prairie was established in 1996 as the nation’s first designated tallgrass prairie. There are constant ongoing efforts to restore the endangered ecosystem like the herd of bison. The Prairie holds 29 miles of hiking trails along the “sea of grass” like the 1.5 mile Prairie Creek Woods Trail.

Just west of Chicago, Castle Rock State Park sits in the Rock River Hills region of Illinois on the west bank of the Rock River. The Rock River was named after the bluff adjacent to the river. This park offers six miles of marked hiking trails with beautiful flora and fauna. There are also remnants of the forests and prairies that were once plentiful on the land.
