What Is A Cannagar & How To Roll A Cannagar The Right Way

Think of cannagars as a supercharged joint.

A cannagar is essentially a cannabis cigar. They come in various sizes; smaller ones for those looking for a quick smoking session, and larger ones for groups or a longer personal session.

Cannagars are perfect for those who have graduated from basic joints and want something that can last longer and hit harder. Compared to blunts, cannagars don’t typically use tobacco leaves, so they’re ideal for anyone wanting to avoid smoking tobacco with their cannabis. Of course, many blunts these days happen with non-tobacco wraps, but cannagars still lean more on the side of cigar-style than blunt style.

Rolling a cannagar might seem daunting at first, but we’re here to take some of the pressure off. If you already know how to roll a joint, then you have the basics down. With just a few extra steps and materials, you’ll have a cannagar in hand in no time.

Choosing The Right Supplies

As you might guess, the key to a good cannagar is in the ingredients you use. It all starts with finding quality materials.

Leaves

To start you’ll need cannabis leaves. Leaves from an indica strain are usually the best because of their wide shape.

If you don’t have access to leaves, hemp rolling papers also work well.

Note: If you have access to cannabis leaves that are “flushing” you can use them. Flushed leaves are not only fun but also contain less chlorophyll. Don’t worry if not, fresh green leaves also work as the curing process removes the harshness.

Cannabis Flower

The cannabis you choose defines your cannagar and how it will smoke (speed/combustion characteristics, etc.).

The most important quality to look for in flower is stickiness. The more resin the flower has, the better it will stick. Other than that, feel free to mix and match varieties.

Depending on the caliber of cigar mold you choose, you will need 4 to 10 grams of cannabis flower per cannagar. Remember to remove the stems and twigs.

Cannabis Oil

The cannabis extract you choose has a big impact on the flavor of the cannagar.

The lighter the oil, the better. Use between 1.5 and 2.5 grams per 10 grams of cannagar. Not only does the oil act as a glue, but it ensures an even burn that lasts for over an hour.

Gluing them all together is where cannagar becomes a craft.

How To Make A Cannagar Weed Cigar

It’s much easier to roll a cannagar with a mold. A cannagar mold is a tool designed to shape and compact cannabis flower into a tight, uniform cylinder, making the process of rolling a cannagar easier. You can buy these molds online or at headshops.

NOTE: We decided to roll with hemp-based blunt paper, instead of fan leaves, so, if you decide to go this route too, just replace any steps that say “leaves” with “hemp-based blunt papers.”

Step 1: Creating The Mold

1. Load the Mold: You begin by filling the mold with your ground cannabis flower. The mold typically has a cylindrical or rectangular shape, and you’ll pack the flower tightly into it to make sure that it holds its form. Some molds come with a hollow core in the center, mimicking the shape of a cigar. Other molds have a skewer that gets placed in the middle of the mold to create a hollow center once the mold has been set. This skewer MUST be removed before you start smoking.

2. Press the Flower: After loading the cannabis into the mold, press it down to eliminate any air pockets. This helps the flower stay together during the rolling process and lets it burn more evenly.

3. Store it: Once the mold is filled and packed, leave it in a cool, dry place for at least 3 hours, or overnight if possible. We recommend 55-62% humidity for 2 days for best results. This allows the flower to settle and take the shape of the mold. Some molds come with a top or lid that you press down to help compact the flower further.

Once your cannagar mold has set, it’s time to assemble the cannagar.

Step 2: Assembling The Cannagar

1. Remove the Cannagar: After the cannabis has set in the mold, you carefully remove the formed shape. The result is a tightly packed, uniform “cylinder” of cannabis, which is now ready to be wrapped in a fan leaf or hemp paper.

If using fan leaves, make sure they are fresh or very lightly cured. If the leaves are too dry, they will crack. It’s also important to make sure they are de-stemmed to avoid any ripping.

2. Use Concentrate to Coat the Core: Coat your cannagar core with concentrates of your choice. You can use rosin or oil, just make sure it is sticky and soft enough to put around your cannagar core.

3. Start Wrapping: Take your de-stemmed leaf halves and start wrapping them around the coated cannagar core in a spiral shape (kind of like a barbershop stick or candy cane). If you roll with all-natural hemp paper, do it similar to how you would roll a joint.

4. Another Layer of Concentrate: After applying your first layer, you can apply another layer of concentrates and another layer of leaves to make sure everything is evenly coated. Plus you’ll have twice as much cannabis, bonus points!

5. Storage: Once you are satisfied with your leaf coating, you can store the finished product in a cool, dry place (again, preferably between 55% and 62% humidity) for a week. If your cannagar mold requires a skewer, keep this in for now to maintain the hollow core. This additional week of curing will remove excess chlorophyll and moisture from the leaves, giving you a better smoke.

6. When Ready to Smoke Your Cannagar: If your cannagar mold contains a skewer, this is the point where it would be removed. As we said before, some molds come with a hollow center already, so you may not need to complete this step.

Light up with a torch lighter and enjoy your fresh cannagar!

Pro tip: Don’t place your lips over the skewer hole or you may get a burn from the hot smoke. Instead, place it over the entire end of the cannagar as if it were a real cigar.

Final Note On The Cannagar Wrap

Mastering the art of rolling a cannagar may seem more difficult than it is; the key is in quality materials, patience, and practice.
