Separating the truth from the myths.

When talking about workplace drug testing, much of the focus is placed on urine sample analysis. While still common practice, an increasing number of employers are opting to conduct saliva tests to check for the presence of THC and other common drugs. A mouth swab is less invasive than other common testing methods, not to mention easier to conduct. While detection time varies, it’s possible for a mouth swab test to pick up traces of THC up to a week after consumption.
There are many ways people attempt to bypass a saliva drug test, using everything from hydrogen peroxide to professionally developed detox chewing gum. If you’re concerned about a saliva drug test in your workplace, here’s everything you need to know, including some potential solutions.
Some of these home remedies are a little more tried and true than others, which amount to little more than urban legends. Some people swear by something as simple as excessive brushing and flossing. If you’re going to roll the dice with nothing but toothpaste, you’re going to want to make sure you get your tongue, gums and all the surfaces inside your mouth too. Far from the most reliable, however.
Some people believe that consuming large volumes of water or chewing ice are enough to pass a mouth swab test. Other options include a protein or fat rich meal, or merely abstaining for a period of time before your test. Here are some more of the most popular home remedies for passing your mouth swab test.
You might have used it to disinfect cuts in the past, but hydrogen peroxide is one of the more common home remedies for a dread saliva test. You’re looking for a concentration of around 3%, and stronger solutions can be diluted with water.
In the days leading up to your test, you’ll want to gargle with the solution a couple of times. After cleaning your mouth thoroughly to remove any debris, you can use the hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash. For the best results, it’s recommended that you keep the peroxide in your mouth for as long as a minute, sucking it back and forth between your teeth and gargling. Spit out the solution, and rinse your mouth thoroughly. To give yourself the best shot at passing, you’ll want to complete another rinse with hydrogen peroxide within an hour of your actual swab.
This is method obviously comes with risks. Hydrogen peroxide is not toxic at the 3% concentration if small amounts are consumed, but it still not recommended. Higher volumes can cause tissue damage and other unwanted side effects. Secondly, keeping a bottle of hydrogen peroxide on you at work in the event of a random drug screening isn’t the most discrete option available.
Another oft touted method for passing a saliva test is vinegar. Vinegar comes up time and time again when we discuss passing drug tests of all sorts. Vinegar based hair treatments are said to be an effective way to pass a hair follicle test, for example.
This could be put down to the acidic nature of vinegars. When consumed as part of your diet, vinegar supposedly helps burn fat and speed up your metabolism by raising creatine levels in the body. This can help get rid of the THC stored in your fat cells after consumption. But does it work to help you pass a saliva test?
Some people report success drinking apple cider vinegar on an empty stomach for a few days before a test. There are even those who claim a swig of balsamic vinegar moments before a test can get you through with a passing grade. Unfortunately, there is little in the way of scientific evidence to suggest vinegar is a foolproof method for passing a mouth swab test.
If rinsing your mouth out with hydrogen peroxide or vinegar doesn’t sound like the most appealing thing, there are people who claim regular old Listerine can do the trick. While there is some anecdotal evidence, it is strongly recommended that you don’t rely on Listerine or other standard mouthwash products if you really want to pass your swab test.
Mouthwash might be great for your overall oral health, but it won’t mask or remove the metabolites in your saliva. The same goes for Listerine strips, or other similar products—great for cleaning the mouth and freshening the breath, not so great for removing or masking the presence of THC.
We’ve covered the most popular home remedies, but if you really want to be sure you’ll pass your drug test, your best best is with something developed in a real lab. Companies like Clear Choice have a proven track record creating detox products for urine, hair and blood tests, so their Oral Clear detox chewing gum is a safe bet when looking to pass your mouth swab test.
The gum actually contains a form of hydrogen peroxide, albeit far more precise and safe than the cocktails you brew in your own bathroom or kitchen. The gum also contains the following:
Oral Clear is not only effective, but it’s discreet and easy to use. Simply chew the gum 30 minutes before your test. The gum contains a liquid which will coat the inside of your mouth—just give it 30 seconds before swallowing. The combination of ingredients masks the presence of THC-COOH metabolites that indicate cannabis consumption. Carrying a pack of gum is also a lot more discreet than taking shots of balsamic vinegar at work.
