Weed Ounce Pricing: What You Need To Know

A rundown on an ounce of cannabis; how much it's worth, price fluctuation, and more.

So how much does an ounce of weed cost? Well, depending on a variety of different factors, that answer is constantly changing. Before we get into what’s making weed prices fluctuate, let’s understand the cannabis lingo and breakdown of measuring dried flower.

  • 3.5 Grams = ⅛ Ounce
  • 7 Grams = ¼ Ounce
  • 14 Grams = ½ Ounce
  • 28 Grams = 1 Ounce

More specifically, the correct amount of grams in one ounce is 28.3495231. Now that you know the measurements of grams and ounces let’s dive into how much an ounce of weed is worth.

If we go back in time to when there was not a single regulated cannabis market worldwide, we would head to street dealers for the rundown on how much weed is worth. In Canada and probably in the United States, one gram of weed would be worth about $10.

Using this as your starting point helps navigate the cost of weed in different weights. For instance, if 1g goes for $10, it would make sense to purchase a 1/8 (3.5g) for about $35.

This is where pricing gets a little more complicated. There is an abundance of factors that go into how much weed costs. For one thing, an ounce of weed is usually the maximum limit for one-time purchasing in recreationally legal states and countries.

So yes, it is a lot of weed, but sometimes, you’ll find deals at dispensaries selling an ounce for a lot cheaper than the high-end storefront down the street.

That’s the key takeaway, “high-end,” or premium, top-shelf quality flower. For a rare strain that was grown with a rich cannabinoid content and with sustainable, eco-friendly methods, it’s normal to see it take the market at higher price points.

Similarly, where the weed was grown is also another factor. It helps to look at a location’s climate for growing marijuana. A report from the Oxford Treatment Center highlights the average medium-quality weed cost throughout the United States.

In a state with ample cannabis cultivation due to favorable climate conditions, like California, the cost of an ounce of weed will run slightly lower. The average medium quality ounce in California goes for $207, whereas in New York, it’s $271. However, in isolated and cold places like Nunavut, Canada, reports say one ounce can go for a whopping $6,800.

If we take in the $10 per gram method, you will find yourself paying a hefty $280 for one ounce of weed (28.4g). This is where the above factors come in, where was the weed-grown, how good quality is it, how old is it, etc.

Sometimes, you won’t be measuring products based on ounces, considering this is mostly done when purchasing dried flower. You won’t need to know the cost of an ounce when buying a vape cartridge or edible.
