On November 8, 2016, Californians decide whether Proposition 64 passes, which would make recreational marijuana legal for adults age 21 and over. But what if you’re already a medical cannabis patient? Do you still need a medical marijuana card in California come 2017? Will the process for renewing your doctor’s recommendation change at all, or stay the same?

Do you still need a medical marijuana card in California?

The short answer is yes, but luckily you can get a mmj card easily & for cheap.

Even if the “Adult Use of Marijuana Act” is approved by voters, the reality is that marijuana dispensaries won’t start serving recreational users until at least January, 2018.

Why? Regulations and implementation take time, and under Prop 64, the established “Bureau of Marijuana Control” won’t start issuing recreational licenses until then.

So unless you’re willing to wait until 2018 to enjoy the splendors of the California cannabis industry, you still need a doctor’s recommendation in CA to access cannabis dispensaries and delivery services, and cultivate your own.

How to get a medical marijuana card is a lot easier today than it used to be, but how did doctor recommendations come to be?

Thanks to the deliberately liberal worded language of Prop 215 (1996), which states that medical cannabis can be used to treat “any condition for which marijuana provides relief,” anyone can become a medical marijuana patient in California.

All you need is a valid driver’s license or state ID (which does NOT have to be from California) and any condition for which medical marijuana provides you relief.

So, what are your options for getting a doctor’s rec and becoming a qualified patient?

1. Consult with Your Primary Physician

The first (and least traveled) route to get a doctor’s recommendation for cannabis is to ask your primary physician to write you a recommendation, although most still won’t do it.

2. Visit a Medical Marijuana Doctor Evaluation Center

Because of most doctors’ unwillingness to write patients recommendations, specialized “cannabis doctors” have found a special niche in helping Californians get approved for medical marijuana.

They go by any number of terms coined by locals, like 420 doctors, weed doctors, mmj doctors, pot doctors, etc., and their offices can be found all over in most major cities (but the experience leaves much to be desired).

3. See a MMJ Doctor Online

By far the safest, cheapest, fastest, most stupendously convenient way to get your medical card is through an online doctor service, which is 100% legal thanks to California’s telehealth laws.

While there are several online mmj doctor services, you’ll find the most value (and cheapest prices) at NuggMD, a service that started in 2015 and has since helped tens of thousands of patients get a medical marijuana card online.

So what are you waiting for? Grab $39 and 10 minutes of your life, because you still need a medical marijuana card in CA.
