This Artist Makes Adorable Pipes That Are Good Enough To Eat
Snack-themed ceramic pipes offer a new way to play with your food. Artist Noël Morical makes adorable pipes that are good enough to eat.
Standard pipes are efficient, fairly simple objects. While there are a literally thousands of different pipe designs, they are mostly all standardized with little more than a bowl, a carb for clearing the bowl chamber, and a mouthpiece. And then in direct contrast, there are the pipes artist Noël Morical makes: cuisine kitsch porcelain pieces.
Good enough to eat
Noël Morical’s pipes take the form of pretzels, peaches, and peanuts. Tagged #snackhappy on her Instagram account, her sunny-side-up egg, croissant, and strawberry, lend new meaning to the usual wake and bake.
According to an interview in Creators, Morical asked herself,
What kind of devices would I personally be interested in? And as a connoisseur of snacking it sort of just clicked, where ‘I should make something that resembles food.’
A self-taught ceramicist, Morical uses public commissions as both exercises and a chance to flex her creativity. Customers can contact Morical and request their favorite snacks be tuned into pipes.
It’s nice to look at something and be like, ‘huh… I can probably make this by hand.’
As with most good creative projects, all of her pipes begin life as a lump of porcelain clay that is then shaped by hand and then glazed in food-safe glazes before firing them.
I start pinching off bits until I kind of get a rough shape, and then there is just a lot of smoothing. I take my hands and just work it until the shape is perfect and it can sit on its own.
Morical recalls one request from a client, who asked for his bowl be one of the dreaded peanuts, a humorous way to interact with his deathly allergy to the nut.
I’m into that! Maybe that opens up this whole other spectrum of people, where it’s like, what are you allergic to? Let me know!
The #snackhappy pipes provide an intimacy most art objects lack -you breathe them into your lungs!
