10 Of The Biggest Hip Hop Feuds In History
Find out what really caused the feud behind some of the most iconic rap battles in hip-hop history.
The world of hip-hop has sparked some of the most epic celebrity feuds in history. Between dis-tracks and snubs on the red carpet, to more serious ways of handling a dispute, some of these rappers have become more known for their beef than their music. While arguments arose over a variety of reasons, I’m sure if these artists had sat down and sparked a joint together, they could have worked it out civilly. Instead, we get to relive 10 of the biggest hip hop feuds in history.
1. Tupac vs. Biggie
Undoubtedly the most famous feud of all time, and the most tragic, was that of Tupac and Biggie. These two started out as great friends and musical icons, but their relationship quickly went south when Biggie released the track “Who Shot Ya?” just days after Tupac was shot.
Taking offense to the song, Tupac released his own set of tracks and the feud was born. The growing tensions between the east coast and west coast music scenes didn’t help. Tupac and Biggie were both eventually assassinated by unknown killers just one month apart. Both cases remain unsolved today.
2. LL Cool J vs. Kool Moe Dee
Taking it way back to the early days of hip-hop, LL Cool J was new to the game and Kool Moe Dee, an original member of one of the first hip-hop groups, The Treacherous Three, didn’t like his demeanor. Dee thought LL was too cocky and disrespectful to those who paved the rap highway before him.
The vet took it upon himself to diss the youngster, even accusing LL of copying his style and stage presence. Battle tracks ensued, but after LL proved his place in the hip-hop community, the feud died down.
3. DMX vs. Ja Rule
Sticking with the old-school rappers scheme, I can’t pass over the feud that occurred between DMX and Ja Rule. The once label mates and friends sparked controversy with their onslaught of bash tracks, seemingly brought on out of nowhere. DMX suddenly accused Ja Rule of imitating his style and he wasn’t having it.
DMX even had beef with Jay-Z over the matter, as the three were originally supposed to form Murder Inc. together. Alas, the battle tracks ensued and both Ja Rule and DMX lost the opportunity of a lifetime to partner with Jay-Z.
4. Jay-Z vs. Nas
Jay-Z couldn’t focus on the fight between DMX and Ja Rule, he was too busy beefing with Nas. It all began when Nas failed to appear at a recording where he was supposed to lay down a verse on Jay-Z’s song “Bring It On.”
Again, the bashing lyrics began again and didn’t stop until 2005, when Jay-Z announced his comeback tour and called for peace among all rappers. He invited Nas to a show and the two squashed whatever issues they had live on stage.
5. N.W.A. vs. Ice Cube
After Ice Cube left the iconic group in the early 90’s, issues began to arise surrounding the royalties and payments the artist was supposed to receive from his previous contributions to N.W.A.
Ice Cube tried to remain civil and keep matters private, but N.W.A. wouldn’t have it and attacked Ice Cube on their track “100 Miles and Runnin”. That was all Ice Cube needed to hear to fight back and quickly released “I Gotta Say What Up!!!” bashing the group he once belonged to.
6. Eminem vs. Insane Clown Posse
Normally, arguments are started over someone not being invited to a party, not the other way around. However, Eminem likes to do everything differently.
While promoting his debut EP, Eminem met with ICP and handed them a flyer about an upcoming release party. The flyer listed the clowns as attending, “maybe,” which they were not too happy about. ICP decided to pass on the invite, to which Eminem took great offense and continued to dis the group for years to come.
7. Azealia Banks vs. Everyone
If you aren’t 100% positive who Azealia Banks is, don’t worry, I wasn’t either and I think I know why. She has had feuds in nearly every professional relationship she has been in. It’s honestly a little disturbing. This might be why so many of us are not overly familiar with her music; she’s been buried by her battles.
First off, she took on Lil Kim and Nicki Minaj, a huge no-no for female MCs, but that’s just the beginning of the list. A$AP Rocky, Baauer, Diplo, Disclosure, Dominique Young Unique, Haze, Iggy Azalea, Kreayshawn, Lady Gaga, Lily Allen, Pharrell, Rita Ora, T.I., and The Stone Roses are just a few of the celebs Azealia Banks has feuded with.
8. 50 Cent vs. Rick Ross
A feud that started with a dirty look at the 2009 BET Awards could end up costing 50 Cent $5 million. Rick Ross thinks 50 Cent eyed him the wrong way during the awards and has never liked the rapper since.
After a sex video featuring Ross’ children’s mother was leaked, 50 Cent took it upon himself to superimpose his face onto the male she is seen having sex with. The baby mama sued 50 Cent and the judge ordered him to pay the $5 million. However, 50 Cent wasn’t giving up the funds that easily, and he filed for bankruptcy.
9. Meek Mill vs. Drake
Probably the most recent feud we’ve all been hearing about is the one between Meek Mill and Drake. Over Twitter, Meek accused Drake of using a ghostwriter to create some of his most iconic anthems.
When Drake didn’t respond, Meek kept the argument going by dissing him during a Nicki Minaj concert, and here is where the real reason for the feud is learned, although the rappers will never admit it. Nicki is well-known for sharing labels with Drake, as well as a few scandalous rumors about a presumed love affair.
Well, Nicki is now dating Meek, and I’m pretty sure Meek just got jealous of the relationship his lady had with Drake and took it upon himself to cause issues. Drake quickly put the Twitter-beef to rest with his release of “Back To Back,” which blew Meek’s diss tracks out of the water.
10. Nicki Minaj vs. Lil Kim
Speaking of Nicki, she’s had some feuds of her own during her career. While Nicki came many years after Lil Kim, it’s easy to see how Kim influenced Nicki’s style and outlandish attitude. Kim noticed the similarities, too, and called Nicki out on stealing her swag.
While Nicki, of course, denied the allegations and proclaimed her originality, that didn’t stop Kim from releasing a barrage of dis tracks aimed at the young rap princess. Nicki hit back and the two continue to have a distaste for each other to this day.
