Joey Bada$$ took to Instagram earlier this year explaining his decision to part ways with smoking weed, a daily ritual that the twenty-three-year-old rapper, actor, and notable cannabis enthusiast said he’s been enjoying since the age of sixteen.
The first of two Instagram stories showed the words “two months, seven days no weed smoke.” Another post followed that contained a much longer caption that gave context to his abrupt decision to stop using cannabis, citing that his decision stemmed from ambitions to better his focus in hopes of achieving personal goals and taking his career to the next level.
“So a few of yous been asking why I don’t smoke anymore and if it’s forever and has it made me better and blah blah blah,” the post starts, “truth is, I never seen myself smoking past 21. I been smoking everyday since 16, I am now 23, so I just took the new year as an opportunity to stop.”
The lengthy explanation from the rapper continues, stating that his decision to cease smoking stemmed from noticing the personal benefits of stopping, which he believed outweighed the immediate effects that recreational cannabis provides.
“I feel 1000x better focused and functional. Ain’t no time to chill it’s time to make milles type of time I’m on… I feel like smoking is for older people who have worked a long time and are looking to relax. Not for young people who have a lot more to accomplish and can’t afford anything slowing them down from getting to their destination.”
However, it looks like the Pro-Era member may have retracted the decision. A post on Joey Bada$$’s Instagram, shared last September, shows him working hard on music production while smoking what seems to be a joint. Though Hot New Hip Hop points out that the post could be a throwback that predates Joey Bada$$’s decision to quit smoking. On the other hand, if the post isn’t a throwback, the rapper may have just needed a tolerance break.
Regardless of whether he’s smoking up or not, Joey Bada$$’s career so far has been remarkable nonetheless. The rapper has managed to release two mixtapes, two albums, land a reoccurring role on the hit sci-fi show Mr. Robot, and become a father, all before turning twenty-four.
