It’s tough to keep track of what’s legal or considered decriminalized from state to state. Thankfully, we’ve got you covered for everything and anything cannabis-related in AustinTexas. Keep reading to find out more about Texas’ weed laws and where to find the plant, both medically and recreationally.

Marijuana Legalization In Austin, TX

Although Texas legalized medical marijuana in September 2021, it’s actually one of the few states where possessing recreational cannabis can still land you in prison.

According to Cannabis Training University, the following activities are still very much illegal and often result in harsh penalties;

  • Possession of up to 4 oz of flower is a misdemeanor
  • Possession of larger amounts of flower or any concentrate is a felony
  • Distribution of 7 grams or less is a misdemeanor
  • Distribution of large amounts of flower or any concentrate to a minor is a felony
  • Cultivation of any flower is a felony

In fact, the DEA in Texas still holds marijuana as a schedule 1 drug right beside LSD, heroin, and ecstasy. There have been a few proposals to decriminalize cannabis in the state, but those initiatives haven’t seen much movement.

We should mention that while cannabis is still very much illegal for recreational use, in SOME cases, especially for first-time offenders, you could be let off with a fine or maybe even a warning. We suggest you keep your cannabis use as discreet as ever if you choose to smoke up in Texas.

In terms of medical cannabis, Texas still has one of the country’s most restrictive programs. There are over 28 million people in the state, and only 3,519 Texans are registered to receive medical marijuana, reports say.

Where To Find Weed On The Down-Low

So you’re still looking for weed around Austin, but you’re not a medical consumer, so there’s no luck there. Some reports say the best ways to find recreational weed on the down-low are the many smoke shops around town. You can’t actually buy weed here, but the staff is happy to give you recommendations on their favorite spots.

If it doesn’t seem all that weird to you, head over to a college campus. Following any cannabis aromas might lead you to some individuals who could point you in the right direction of where to get it.

Finally, if you’re around town during a music festival, you’re bound to run into fellow cannabis connoisseurs who might share some of their stash or tell you where they got it. Keep in mind that staying discreet, quiet, and on the down-low about your hunt for cannabis is ideal for keeping out of trouble with the law.
