Conservative commentator and archenemy of Delta Air Lines, Ann Coulter recently shocked no one a few days ago when she proclaimed that marijuana is ‘destroying the country’ while speaking at last weekend’s Politicon. For someone who has referred to themselves as a Christian and a mean-spirited bigot in the same sentence, her melodramatic views regarding a non-toxic plant seem almost, overdue.
During an episode of Piers Morgan Live in 2014, Coulter stated,
Alcohol is good for you. Pot is not good for you. And in fact it is very cancerous. Now they’re getting these young kids coming in and having heart attack at young ages. And it’s because they’re potheads.
And, by the way, at least they’ll save me money if they’ll just go ahead and die, but they rarely just go ahead and die.
False, check. Lack of human decency, check. False again, check. Blatantly offensive, check. But that last point actually is true, since pot has been linked to not one, not two, but zero deaths. Such creative lies though, maybe she smoked a peppy sativa before this interview?
Reefer madness was a fanciful, propagandistic tale of one’s descent into hallucinations, immorality and overall craziness. But what is the name of the condition where someone consistently throws facts to the wind, doubles down on whatever pops into their mind, and insults the intelligence of every person they encounter in order to keep themselves relevant?
Covering such nonsensical tripe is as irritating as it is exhausting, but it gives us a chance to sprinkle some truth into the mix. So, here’s what happened at Politicon:
At the nonpartisan event Politicon, whilst debating with progressive correspondent Ana Kasparian from The Young Turks over the racial disparities in marijuana arrests and charges, Coulter cited a study (unquestionably conducted in her imagination) claiming that “Blacks were about 10 times more likely to lie and say they hadn’t smoked pot.”
The New York Times reported in 2013, “Nationally, blacks were 3.7 times as likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than whites in 2010, even though they used marijuana at similar rates.”
Coulter also stated that, “no one gets arrested and tried for possession of marijuana.” Yet, the New York Times reported in 2016 that,
Arrests for possessing small amounts of marijuana exceeded those for all violent crimes last year… and a disproportionate number of those arrested are African-Americans, who smoke marijuana at rates similar to whites but are arrested and prosecuted far more often for having small amounts for personal use.
If you don’t know whether to laugh or vomit at this point, this final gem should put you over the top. Coulter stated,
You can legalize all the drugs you want when there isn’t a welfare state. Marijuana makes people retarded, especially when they’re young.
First of all, any adult who uses the ‘R-word’ isn’t truly deserving of such a platform and while studies have suggested that marijuana can have negative impacts on the developing teen brain, the same can be said for any substance and the majority of commonly prescribed pharmaceuticals.
