What Are THC Tinctures? Uses, Effects, Dosage

The complete guide with everything you need to know about THC tinctures.

THC tinctures are a convenient and discreet way to consume our beloved cannabinoids. Tinctures with THC provide all the effects and benefits we experience with any other consumption method, but they’re far easier to consume and don’t attract any eyes.

Plus, would you be surprised to find out that tinctures kick in faster than most edibles? That’s because the oil within the tincture is sublingual, absorbed by the mucous membranes to produce effects within 15 minutes, sometimes even less.

Before we dive into how this works, let’s get a better understanding of THC tinctures as a whole, what they’re used for, and the most trusted options on the market. Read on to learn more.

What Are THC Tinctures?

THC tinctures are, in the most basic sense, cannabis extracts in a liquid and concentrated form. They’re made by soaking the flower in different substances such as alcohol, vegetable glycerin, or oil. There are a few different kinds of THC tinctures, including:

Pure THC Tinctures: THC-only or THC-isolate tinctures contain only THC from the cannabis plant and no other cannabinoids, terpenes, or flavonoids. These tinctures often have more potent effects, depending on the THC percentage in the bottle.

Full Spectrum Tinctures: These oils contain THC, CBD, terpenes, and other minor cannabinoids as a result of full-plant extraction. That means other cannabinoids like CBN and CBG were not filtered out. Using all of these cannabinoids together produces what’s known as the entourage effect, meaning they work off each other to create a more pronounced and complete effect.

Broad Spectrum Tinctures: This is the happy medium between THC Isolate and Full Spectrum. While THC Isolate only contains THC, and full spectrum tinctures contain the full spectrum of plant compounds, broad spectrum contains a broad spectrum of cannabis compounds. More specifically, it contains all cannabinoids and terpenes without THC. This gives some consumers peace of mind, knowing their tincture has no traces of psychoactive THC.

Effects Of THC Tinctures

The effects of THC tinctures are very similar to what you’d expect with any other consumption method, including:

  • Euphoria
  • Relaxation
  • Mood elevation
  • Pain relief
  • Increased appetite
  • Anti-nausea
  • Anti-anxiety

How Are Tinctures Made?

We can make cannabis tinctures in two ways: the hot method or the cold method.

Cold Method: Cannabis is sealed in a jar filled with high-proof alcohol. After sitting for a few weeks, the plant matter is discarded, and the alcohol remains absorbed with cannabinoids.

Hot Method: Alcohol absorption is also crucial with the hot method. The only difference is the application of heat, usually on a stove, over a long period of time. This is a bit trickier, considering there’s a higher risk of ruining the product.

If you’re the type to enjoy making your own products, here’s an easy way to make a cannabis tincture. We recommend using high-proof food-grade alcohol to make THC tinctures, but you can also use glycerin or carrier oil such as coconut oil. Never use isopropyl alcohol.

The step-by-step could not be simpler:

Step 1. Grind some cannabis flower and decarboxylate in the oven at 240°F – As there is no heat in the process, you need to activate your cannabis.

Step 2. In a glass jar, mix 750ml of high-proof alcohol with every eighth (3.5 grams) of weed. There should be enough alcohol to submerge the flower. Stir very well.

Tip: One-eighth of cannabis for every 3 fluid ounces of solvent produces a fairly mild and comfortable dose. Reduce the amount of alcohol or increase the amount of flower by ⅓ for a more potent effect.

Step 3. Seal the jar and let it sit for a few weeks (the longer you let it sit, the more potent the final product will be). Store in a cool and dry place.

Step 4. Shake your mixture once a day.

Step 5. After at least 4 weeks, strain the oil into a jar through a coffee filter. The dark liquid that remains is your THC oil.

Different Ways To Use THC Tinctures

There are three common ways to use THC tinctures to help switch up your consumption routine. These include:

Sublingual Use: This method is quite simple. Place a few drops under the tongue, wait a minute, and swallow. This allows the mucous membranes to absorb the THC, which produces a faster onset of effects than digestion. Still, whatever’s leftover and swallowed will also produce effects but at a more gradual pace.

Ingested Use: This method is similar to the above, as you can place the oil in your mouth and swallow it directly, and the effects take a bit longer to kick in. However, you can also get versatile and place a few drops in beverages, foods, and recipes to create your infused version. Simply place your usual dose into your recipe and wait for the effects.

Topical Use: If your carrier oil is something relatively safe and good for the skin, you could use your THC oil for topical use to treat muscle pain or skin irritation. Just ensure the other ingredients in your product are safe for topical use.

How To Dose THC Tinctures

As with all other cannabis edibles, the general rule of thumb is to start low and go slow. This is especially true when dosing potent cannabinoids like those in Binoid’s products below.

Luckily, THC tinctures from reputable companies are rigorously lab-tested not just for purity and safety but also for potency. Consumers have a right to know exactly what they consume and how much of it. You will likely find the dosing instructions in the product description on the brand’s website.

If not, here’s what to do. Your tincture dropper should have lines indicating the number of milliliters. As mentioned, start low and go slow. Start with 1ml and wait an hour to feel the full effects. If you feel nothing, slowly increase your dose until you experience your desired effects.

Benefits Of THC Tinctures

Many choose to use and enjoy THC tinctures because they are:

Discreet: Tinctures are one of the most discreet methods of consumption. They come in typical tincture/dropper bottles and don’t have an unwanted smell. It’s much less noticeable than sparking up a joint.

Easy To Dose: Tinctures come with droppers and precise indications of how much to consume. It’s effortless for the user to establish exactly how much THC they want to ingest in order to produce a more precise and customized effect.

Fast-Acting: If taken sublingually, the best way to make the most of your tincture, the effects appear faster than edibles because the mucous membranes absorb THC.

Consistent & Reliable: THC tinctures let you know exactly how much THC you’re dosing, meaning you can expect the effects of your future dose and increase/decrease it depending on your experience and preferences.

Versatile: We can consume tinctures in a few different ways. Sublingually or ingesting it through foods and beverages. You can even use it as a topical on the skin – you won’t get high from it, but THC has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and possibly even anti-aging properties.

Long-Lasting: If stored properly (i.e., in a dark, cool cabinet away from direct sunlight), THC tinctures will last for years.
