Choosing The Best Cannabis Plant Grow Lights for Your Facility

What should you keep in mind when choosing the lights for your grow-op?

Cannabis growers and cultivators have various choices to make when looking for a lighting system to grow plants, emphasizing efficiency and productivity. The lighting system used for certain grow operations depends on three main factors; indoor greenhouses, technique (single-tier or vertical racking), and cultivar.

The U.S. Department of Energy suggests that growers switch their lighting to light-emitting diode (LED) technology. According to the Cannabis Business Times, the U.S. Department of Energy said that this move could reduce electricity usage by 40% and save roughly $240 million in operations.

Before you start thinking of replacing your light fixtures with LEDs, consider creating a baseline of your operation in the Research Innovation Institute’s benchmarking tool, Cannabis Powerscore. This will help you record your current key performance indicators (KPIs) for energy efficiency, productivity, and lighting performance, so you know how your current lighting operation is performing.

Suppose you plan on upgrading your lighting system and potentially using LED technology. In that case, you should continue to benchmark your facility and grow operation to keep track of the benefits through PowerScore while taking note of the improvements you’ve found in your KPIs.

Research Innovation Institue (RII) uses an analysis of PowerScore data to show that indoor cannabis cultivation operations using LED lights for flowering achieve 34% better average facility efficiencies and 80% better average electric production efficiencies than indoor grows using double-ended HPS lighting for the growth stage.

If you’re looking to evaluate lighting solutions for your grow facility or want to find new light fixtures for your in-house operation, here is a list of questions to ask suppliers to decide if their product is right for you, courtesy of Cannabis Business Times:

  • What is the warranty of your product?
  • What is the rated fixture life and control equipment life? What tests were performed to validate the claim?
  • Has your product been tested on my cultivar(s)?
  • What is the spectral quantum distribution (SQD) of your product, and does it align with my desired light recipe?
  • Can you provide Photosynthetic Photon Intensity Distributions (PPID) to show the photosynthetic light emitted at different angles so I can plan lighting layouts? (The PPID allows you to create your own lighting plans rather than relying on the manufacturer.)
  • What technical assistance is available during the design phase for lighting plans?
  • What help can you provide if I encounter problems during production?
  • Is there a cost for technical support or limitations on when/how to access it?
