Does CBD Kill Bacteria?

Read up on how this cannabinoid is saving lives.

Can CBD Kill Bacteria?

Yes, CBD can kill bacteria. But not all bacteria, that is.

Several studies have pointed out that CBD is especially effective in killing Gram-positive bacteria, whereas it’s less effective in killing Gram-negative bacteria.

This is pretty surprising considering how Gram-positive bacteria are usually the harder kind to kill because of their sturdy protective properties.

The following species of bacteria can be killed by CBD and are known to build resistance to antibiotics;

  • Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) (leading to Staph Infections)
  • Clostridioidez difficile (leading to colon infections)
  • Streptococcus pneumoniae (leading to pneumonia or pneumococcal meningitis)

Furthermore, researchers found that CBD can also kill four different kinds of Gram-negative bacteria that are notorious for resisting antibiotics;

  • Neisseria gonorrhoeae (leading to sexually transmitted gonorrhea)
  • Neisseria meningitides (leading to meningitis or bloodstream infection)
  • Moraxella catarrhalis (leading to bronchitis)
  • Leigionella pneumophila (leading to Legionnaires’ disease)

Can CBD Save Lives?

Understanding that Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria can build a resistance to antibiotics is vital. Because of this, the CDC reports that roughly 35,000 people each year die from infection due to antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

We can safely say that CBD has remarkable antimicrobial properties. This is especially true for certain strains of bacteria that can cause life-threatening infections and may lead to death.

Take MRSA, for example. According to Healthline, this Gram-positive bacteria that causes Staph Infections is responsible for 323,700 infections and 10,600 deaths per year.

The CDC notes that Clostridioidez difficile, a Gram-positive bacteria that leads to colon infections, causes 223,900 infections and 12,800 deaths yearly.

Thus, CBD has a promising capability to save lives and kill bacteria that are often resistant to antibiotics. To see which product is right, read our guide for more information about the best CBD products for your current condition.
