Before We Forget: Cannabis Helps With ADHD

Patients saw significant improvements after consumption.

New studies show that patients with ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) say that cannabis helps depress the disorder’s regular symptoms while reducing the many side effects that prescription medication causes. According to the study published in the Journal of Attention Disorders, two passionate investigators from Washington State University conducted an online survey with 1,738 students who have ADHD.

“Participants with ADHD who have used cannabis reported that cannabis has acute beneficial effects on many symptoms of ADHD (e.g., hyperactivity, impulsivity),” the study noted. “Further, they perceived cannabis to improve most of their medication side effects (e.g., irritability, anxiety). Finally, cannabis use frequency was a significant moderator of the associations between symptom severity and executive dysfunction.”

At the end of the study, the authors closed by saying that “People with ADHD may be using cannabis to self-medicate for many of their symptoms and medication side effects and that more frequent use may mitigate ADHD-related executive dysfunction.”

The new information about cannabis and ADHD is a positive step toward removing the stigma around marijuana and how it does more harm than good, which is seemingly far from the truth. According to a study published in the European Neuropsychopharmacology journal, those involved in the study who have ADHD used cannabis extracts to examine how it affects the disorder. “There were further indications for improvement in activity and cognitive performance, and emotional lability,” read the study.

We must note that although countless studies conclude that cannabis (in a variety of forms) can aid ADHD, there’s still a lack of evidence that suggests whether or not it’s safe to consume cannabis with ADHD medications. In addition, those prescribed with Adderall are often informed of the risks involved: increased blood pressure, loss of appetite, disrupted heart rhythm, headaches, decreased inhibitions, and more. So using cannabis along with Adderall might not be the best option for your heart.

That said, if you’re not prescribed any medication but still feel like you suffer from symptoms of ADHD, there are a variety of strains that can help mitigate the disorder’s symptoms and help you focus on your task at hand. Instead of opting for THC strains, there are countless CBD products on the market specifically designed to calm the mind and stimulate concentration.

There’s a compelling story about an avid Adderall user who found that CBD effectively treated his ADHD, resulting in him kicking the prescription medication to the curb. If you’re interested and can relate to stories like this, get the full rundown here
