Author of Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, Thompson’s reputation as a cannabis-loving, psychonaut precedes him. Regardless of his substance use, Hunter S. Thompson was an immensely successful writer who has made his way into the mid-century literary canon and inspired a new style of journalism. Now, Thompson’s widow wants to bring “Gonzo” cannabis to his fans.

Literature nerds will soon be able to smoke the exact same cannabis strains as Hunter S. Thompson. His widow, Anita Thompson, has been holding onto Thompson’s favorite flowers for over a decade.

She wrote on Facebook,

I have found a legal method to extract the DNA from Hunter’s personal marijuana and hashish that I saved for 12-15 years. I am in the process of making the strains available to those who would like to enjoy the authentic Gonzo strains in legal states. – Anita Thompson

Anita has been trying to get her husband’s strains into Colorado dispensaries for quite some time now. Unfortunately, extracting DNA from dried cannabis is significantly more difficult than cloning a living strain. Finally, a partner company has agreed to make her dream a reality.

Anita saved a total of six cannabis strains. She plans to brand the strains under the name “Gonzo”, the same name as the journalistic style her husband developed. The cannabis strains will be sold as recreational marijuana.

Those who have read any of Thompson’s work will know that he had broad tastes when it came to mind-altering substances. But, cannabis was always a favorite for the counterculture icon.

One of his famous lines on the subject reads,

I have always loved marijuana. It has been a source of joy and comfort to me for many years. And I still think of it as a basic staple of life, along with beer and ice and grapefruits – and millions of Americans agree with me. – Thompson

In order to provide this basic staple to the masses, Anita Thompson had to get special permission from Gonzo Trust, a corporation set up by her husband before his death.

She now owns the likeness of her husband and has bought back Owl Farm, her husband’s residence prior to his death in 2005. where she hopes to open a writing workshop.

Anita hopes to open a writing workshop on her late husband’s property.  She hopes that selling branded Gonzo cannabis in legal states will help raise money for the Farm and writing scholarships.

At this point, it is unclear whether or not Gonzo cannabis will be a part of the new Owl Farm, but that certainly would be exciting.

In terms of mind-altering substances, retracing Thompson’s footsteps is a daunting task. As the legend himself explains,

I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they’ve always worked for me. – Thompson

Perhaps Thompson’s legendary buds will work for someone else, too.
