Ahh, cannabis! By far the most popular recreational substance in the world, at least behind socially legal ones like alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine. But what is the most popular form of use? Well, guess what, someone did a study on that, too.

How people prefer to partake

The study found that the breakdown of peoples’ preferred method of ingestions is:

  1. Joints (89%)
  2. Bong, Waterpipe, Hookah (49%)
  3. Bowl or Pipe (48%)
  4. Edible or Drink (30%)
  5. Blunt (25%)
  6. Vaporizer or Electronic Device (10%)

Take a look at that and I’m sure you realize that it adds up to far more than 100%. The study finds that a large number – 44% – use more than one method.

What this data means

By far, the most popular method to ingest cannabis is with a joint. This could have to do with it being the easiest method to grasp for new smokers. Another factor could be that joints don’t require paraphernalia. They are easier to roll than blunts and generally require less weed.

Vaporizers, on the other hand, have the least usage, at only 10%. Why? Well, they are relatively new compared to other means. Cannabis specific vapes are also harder to come by unless you are in a legal state.

Why the data is so important

Sure, the study makes for an interesting coffee table chat, seeing how you rank on your preference compared to others. But the study has an impact well beyond simple meme status. It shows you where the money is.

Cannabis companies can look at the data and see that if they want to maximize business, selling pre-rolled joints can be huge. Selling edibles can easily make up a third of your revenue. Companies can also see vapes have a huge potential to expand.

Health impact

Cannabis companies aren’t the only ones eyeing the data closely. The researchers who conducted the study said:

Changing state policies related to marijuana use may lead to changes in the mode of use or reason for use, which could impact individual- and population-level health. Ongoing and improved surveillance systems that collect more-detailed information about patterns of marijuana use, including mode of and reasons for use, are important for enhancing understanding of the health consequences of marijuana use and public health planning.

Other numbers show that in legal states, vaporizers, edibles, and oils are making headway over combustion. As customers become more familiar with the health effects, and best methods for ingestion, they naturally choose safer means. State governments can look at this data, as well as data in the following years, to earmark trends and adjust public education campaigns for health.
