Exploring Greece cannabis scene, from where to score your stash to soaking up the vibes on these stunning islands.
So, you’re heading to Greece and want to know if you can bring your green friend along.
As advocates for always bringing along some green, we at Herb don’t blame you.
Greece, with its rich history, vibrant culture, and laid-back vibes, might seem like the perfect spot to light up. But as of 2024, recreational weed with more than 0.2% THC is still illegal. Medical cannabis, however, has been legal since 2017, though it’s tightly regulated.
Will that really stop you from finding a stash while you’re there?
We sure hope not (just kidding, for legal purposes).
In a significant twist back in 2017, Greece legalized the medicinal use of cannabis, joining the ranks of other forward-thinking European countries like Finland, the Czech Republic, Portugal, the Netherlands, Spain, and Germany.
Greece, known as the “cradle of Western civilization,” has definitely made progress in its cannabis laws but hasn’t yet legalized the possession, cultivation, or distribution of weed for non-medical purposes. The Greece weed laws are stricter compared to other European countries, and consequences can include:
Most judges have some discretion in sentencing and consider the amount of cannabis seized and the offender’s circumstances. Chances are, as a tourist, you won’t be slapped with a prison sentence, but you might land yourself in a headache with the Greek court system and an inconvenient fine to pay.
Greece’s medical cannabis legislation allowed the import, export, and production of medical cannabis products, subject to strict regulations and licensing.
Patients with qualified medical conditions could access medical cannabis through a prescription from licensed healthcare professionals overseen by the Greek National Medicines Organization.
Some of these qualifying conditions include:
Despite this progressive measure, some obstacles, such as bureaucratic difficulties and lack of transparency in distribution, have hindered patients’ access to medical cannabis.
The delay in implementing the program has been a point of contention, raising criticism from patients and advocates.
Greece has embraced the hemp scene, allowing its cultivation and processing for industrial purposes.
Under Greece laws on weed (Law 4130/2013), it’s legal to grow and use certain varieties of cannabis, as long as the THC content stays below 0.2%. This is a bit stricter than the 0.3% THC limit most other countries, including the U.S., follow.
You’ll find plenty of storefronts selling hemp-based products all over Greece, so getting your hands on a CBD-rich stash won’t be a problem.

You might be surprised to know that you can walk up to any of the scattered vending machines or dispensaries in Greece and buy cannabis or alternative cannabinoid products.
These vending machines or dispensaries aren’t stocked with the typical THC you know and love, but they do offer other cannabinoids that can get you just as high, like HHC, or THC-P, known to be almost 30x stronger than THC.
If you’re after classic THC bud, street dealers are your best option. Finding a connection isn’t too difficult if you strike up a conversation with the right locals. Just be cautious, and try to ensure you’re buying from someone trustworthy (or as trustworthy as a stranger in Greece can be).
As a tourist, though, you can expect to pay a bit more than the locals. Prices can also vary depending on where you are. Some islands, like Zakynthos, are known for hitting tourists with that premium price tag, where you might end up paying over 20 euros per gram.
So, keep in mind that location and your “tourist status” can affect the price.
