Does Weed Help With Nausea?

Cannabis is more likely to alleviate nausea than cause it, except in conditions like CHS.

Many people use cannabis to alleviate symptoms like pain and nausea.

However, not everyone experiences relief; for some, cannabis may actually induce nausea.

This article explores how cannabis can simultaneously be a powerful anti-nausea agent and, for some, a trigger for discomfort.

What Does Research Say?

One study followed 882 individuals who self-administered cannabis 2,220 times between 2016 and 2019. Each person tracked their nausea levels before and after use, and within just five minutes, many reported feeling relief. By the one-hour mark, over 96% experienced significant alleviation of their nausea.

Many preclinical studies show that cannabinoids like THC, CBD, THCV and CBDV in cannabis products can reduce nausea. There are even some THC-based medications, like Dronabinol and Nabilone, which are FDA-approved for treating nausea and vomiting induced by chemotherapy.

However, it’s not all smooth sailing. Cannabis can sometimes cause nausea, particularly if consumed in high THC concentrations. This overindulgence can lead to ‘greening out,’ a condition where too much THC overwhelms your system.

In some cases, consistent, heavy use of cannabis may lead to Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS), where long-term, chronic cannabis users experience frequent nausea.

Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome

CHS is a condition that can develop in daily or frequent cannabis users, typically after a decade of use. It involves repeated cycles of severe nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

The causes of CHS are not fully understood, but it may be linked to a buildup of toxins from cannabis or changes in the body’s cannabinoid receptors, such as CB1, due to prolonged THC exposure. This can disrupt normal digestive functions, leading to the symptoms of CHS.

Does Cannabis Help With Nausea?

Cannabis may very well help turn down your nausea like it does for many.

But, if you’re one to use consistency and in high amounts, then you may feel temporarily nauseous or risk developing conditions like CHS that will increase nausea and vomiting.

First, stay hydrated. Drinking water can help settle your stomach and flush your system. If water alone doesn’t help, try sipping ginger tea or a sports drink to restore electrolytes.

Next, find a calm, cool environment to relax. Fresh air can also work wonders, so a short walk outside might help alleviate your symptoms. If you’re still feeling unwell, lying down in a quiet, dark room may provide relief.

Consider eating light, bland foods like crackers or toast if you think you can stomach it. Avoid heavy, greasy, or spicy foods until you’re feeling better.

Moving forward, be cautious with the amount and type of cannabis you consume. Choose strains known to be lower in THC and consider moderating your intake.

If nausea continues to be a problem, it might be wise to speak with a healthcare provider to rule out conditions like CHS.
