Happy Delta 8 Day: Celebrating This Federally Legal Cannabinoid

December 8th is D8 day. How are you celebrating?

You’re familiar with 420, and maybe you’ve heard of 710. Well, there’s another weed holiday coming your way. While 420 is the unofficial holiday that celebrates all things cannabis, 710 honors cannabis oils and concentrates.

This time around, we’re paying tribute to the federally legal cannabinoid Delta 8 THC. We encourage you to pick up your favorite D8 product this December 8th and honor this precious compound the right way.

See below for more information about Delta 8 THC, its legality, where it was discovered, and the best products on the market.

What Is Delta 8 THC?

As mentioned, Delta 8 THC is a cannabinoid that naturally occurs in the hemp plant. However, it’s only present in about 0.1 % of the plant.

Because it’s present in such small traces, chemists can extract it from the plant or use a process called isomerization to convert CBD or Delta 9 THC into Delta 8 THC.

Who Discovered Delta 8 THC?

Although Delta 8 is rather new to our industry, it’s been around for decades. Only after the 2018 Farm Bill did Delta 8 become popular, even though it was first discovered in 1941 by chemist Roger Adams and colleagues at the University of Illinois.

In 1941, he and his colleagues achieved the partial synthesis of Delta 8, although it took until 1965 to reach total synthesis. They would often run studies and trials to test the psychoactive levels of Delta 8 THC, where human patients would ingest the cannabinoid and record their effects.

Curious about the psychoactive effects of Delta 8 THC? See how it’s different from Delta 9 THC below.

What's The Difference Between Delta 8 THC And Delta 9 THC?

Delta 9 THC is the classic cannabinoid. It’s the primary psychoactive cannabinoid in cannabis responsible for the infamous euphoric high. Think of Delta 9 THC as the older cousin of Delta 8. Both share psychoactive effects, but Delta 8 isn’t quite as strong.

In scientific terms, the only difference between Delta 9 and Delta 8 is their chemical makeup. Both have double bonds on different chains of carbon atoms. Delta 8’s double bond is on the 8th chain, and Delta 9’s is on the 9th chain, hence their names.

In terms of effects, Delta 8 THC provides a more mild, clear-headed high that isn’t as overwhelming or paranoia-producing as Delta 9 THC. However, it can still produce significant mental and physical effects. As with any cannabis product, it’s wise to start low and slow to examine how your body reacts and feels after dosing Delta 8 THC.

Where Is Delta 8 THC Legal?

Depends where you’re located. Canada has nothing to worry about regarding all things cannabis. The plant is recreationally legal across the country, and Delta 8 products are sold far and wide.

However, the legality of Delta 8 THC in the United States is far more interesting. Under the 2018 Farm Bill, cannabis and hemp products must contain less than 0.3% Delta 9 THC. Because Delta 8 is not Delta 9, that means there are virtually no limits, laws, or regulations on how Delta 8 can be used, dosed, and sold.

You could consider Delta 8 in a legal loophole. Because it’s technically compliant with the Farm Bill, it’s legal in all 50 states. However, some states have chosen to ban it.
