Exploring Drake's highs beyond the billboard charts.
It’s been a few years since Canadian rapper Drake was seen sparking up on stage alongside fellow rapper and recording artist Wiz Khalifa. He’s even been seen passing a joint to Lil Wayne.
What the internet had to say about it was pretty funny. “He’s not actually inhaling,” “Bro’s just puffing clouds,” and those sorts of comments led us to believe: maybe they’re right.
Does Drake smoke marijuana? Maybe he doesn’t but he puts on a show for the sake of hip-hop culture, where cannabis is often deeply intertwined. Well, this Certified Lover Boy definitely isn’t a certified stoner.
Even though he has songs like “Free Smoke” and a cannabis company called More Life Growth Company, Drake’s relationship with weed is odd.
Let’s get into the facts behind Drake’s smoking habits.
Yes, although he’s adamant that he only uses it moderately and isn’t a so-called “stoner.” In a 2012 interview with The Guardian, Drake admitted to smoking weed. He adds, “But do I do it excessively? No. I’m not a reckless guy. I do it all within moderation.”
Less like Wiz Khalifa, Lil Wayne, Travis Scott, and Snoop Dogg, who proudly infuse marijuana into their raps and everyday lives, Drake isn’t as deep into the culture. Nonetheless, his music contains a few references to the plant that suggest he might enjoy the occasional puff.
Drake’s weed history is pretty confusing. While most weed-loving rappers usually have some sort of timeline of what they started smoking, Drake doesn’t.
The earliest information we have of Drake smoking weed was, funny enough, right before his Degrassi audition. Sure, he landed the role. But he also came out stating that it’s something he regrets since it impacted his performance.
The “Hotline Bling” artist later fell into a conspiracy theory when fans noticed that he might not know how to smoke weed. With videos showing the rapper quickly exhaling without taking a full, deep breath, skeptical stoners are wondering if he’s actually getting high.
Then, Drake tapped into the cannabis industry as the majority owner of More Life Growth, in partnership with Canopy Growth. This was another huge topic because it had consumers wondering: Is Drake in it for the weed or just the money?
In videos with Lil Wayne, who reportedly introduced a whole life of kush to Drake during his first audition, it seems like Drake looks comfortable around marijuana but never really confirms smoking himself. Even his close friends like Jorja Smith have never publicly confirmed if Drake gets stoned.
In most cases, fans will think Drake smokes weed simply because of his song lyrics. He’s got quite a knack for spitting rhymes about a herb that he smokes “moderately.” Songs like “Free Smoke” are about as weedy as Drake gets, as many of his other songs are simply references to the plant.
For example, in “Crew Love” and “F*ckin’ Problems,” he mentions smoking under star projectors or looking at stars, which seems more like a stereotypical depiction of smoking weed and getting high rather than a personal experience.

These two artists have been going head-to-head recently. The Drake Vs. Kendrick beef isn’t slowing down, not since Kendrick caught the world’s attention with his half-time show and mega concert, showcasing the next generation of hip-hop in front of the recently-inaugurated President Trump.
With both artists producing chart-topping hits from commercial mixtapes to immersive full-length albums, they’re now sharing the global beef stage with a feud that’s only getting crazier.
Now that these two artists are facing off more than ever, it sort of makes you wonder—who’s more likely to smoke weed: Drake Vs. Kendrick?
Honestly, we’d say Drake. He seems to be much more associated with the cannabis culture, even though he only uses it occasionally.
On the other hand, Kendrick Lamar occasionally references cannabis and other drugs in his songs. But Drake’s close affiliation with long-time smoker Lil Wayne, and the fact that he has a cannabis company, might suggest that Drake’s more likely to spark up.
So, does Drake smoke weed? The evidence suggests he likely has at least tried it, especially considering his close relationship with notorious smoker Lil Wayne and his business ventures in the cannabis space.
But does Drake smoke regularly? Definitely not. He rarely raps about it, and he’s firm on being a moderate smoker who occasionally indulges in the benefits of weed, but not enough to keep him stoned all day. He’s pretty careful about his public image, trying to maintain a relevant “cool” factor while also raising a son.
Ultimately, it doesn’t matter if Drake smokes weed. What matters is he gets back in the studio pumping out new tunes for hip-hop fans worldwide. Get to it, Drizzy.
